Trophy Jacket
Haworth Hodgkinson
Tending the needs of damaged soldiers
at the casualty clearing station,
she quickly learns her time is best spent
with those she has a chance of saving,
learns to spurn those, delirious or quiet,
who will not last the night,
and, from the ones she nurses back to action,
collects regimental badges,
stitches their insignia
to the inside of her jacket
to keep them close when she returns
from the combat zone.
